Catherine Butler is a 5th Generation owner of Hugh Phillips Gower Butchers established in 1878. She is the great-granddaughter of the founder and the only woman in Wales to own abattoir and hold a full slaughtering licence. She has been highly successful in a traditionally man’s world.
Catherine and her team provide customers with local Welsh produce, hand selected from local farms, processed in the abattoir and sold at the shop in Swansea Market, working by the mantra ‘gate to plate’ with all industry protected, geographic indication standards. She offers slaughtering and cutting services to local butchers as well as to local farmers who want their own stock back for the freezer.
She is very proud of her meat products that are also very popular among the tourists who visit Swansea Market. Due to this growing client base from outside of the local area, last year she launched an online shop (www.bestolninebutcher.co.uk) so products can be delivered with next day delivery to anywhere in the UK.
Her contribution to the local economy and her innovative approach to business has been recognised by a number of organisations through key awards including:
• Women in Business Awards 2017: Winner of the Innovation in Business category
• FSB Wales Awards 2018: Winner of the family business category (Catherine now go onto the finals of the FSB UK Awards in London this May)
• Swansea Bay Business Awards 2018: highly commended in the Innovation in Business category.
